Welcome To Colonie
The town of Colonie, formed in 1895, is the most populous suburb of Albany and the third largest town by area in Albany County. Colonie’s estimated population is 81,591. The name is derived from the Dutch Colonye or "Colonie", derived from the Colonie ofRensselaerswyck.
All the land outside the Village of Beverwyck (now Albany) was referred to as the "Colonie". The town of Colonie is north of the city of Albany and is at the northern border of the county. Within the town of Colonie are two villages, one also known as Colonie and the other known as Menands.
Through to the 1930s, Colonie was a simple series of extensive farms and a few hamlets. The town was once known as “Albany’s Breadbasket” because of its rich agricultural history. However, in the post-war years, there was intensive suburban development, originally on the corridor that connected Albany and Schenectady, but quickly throughout the entire township. By 1980, suburban development had saturated the community.
The town is a bit of a media hub, with two dedicated weekly newspapers, the Colonie Spotlight and Loudonville Spotlight. Channel 9 on Spectrum News in the town is a station devoted to town news, programming, and events. The studios are located inside the William K. Sanford town library on Albany Shaker road. In addition, the headquarters and distribution center for the Capital Region's major daily newspaper, Times Union, lies within the town.
Notable people from the town of Colonie include Leland Stanford, the founder of Stanford University and Fred Baldes, owner of one of the oldest and fastest growing insurance agencies in the state, The Cote Insurance Agency.
Recreational opportunities include the nearby Albany Symphony Orchestra, Empire State Plaza, museums and galleries. The Adirondack Mountains to the north, providing a 6 million acre playground for every type of outdoor activity. Locally, the town park has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, nature and cross-country ski trails, a boat launch, 5 softball fields, picnic facilities and a playground.
If shopping is your thing, Colonie has every type of retail environment, from specialty stores and shops, to outlets and malls.
