Saratoga Springs, NY was established as a settlement in 1819 from the Town of Saratoga. (Presently known as Schuylerville) and it became a City in 1915.
It's Population was 28,005 as of 2018. Native Americans believed the Springs today called High Rock Spring had medicinal properties.
Tourism was started by the 1832 arrival of the Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad which brought thousands of travelers to the famous Mineral Springs. Resort Hotels developed to accommodate them with the Gideon Putnam being the first built for those travelers.
In the 19th Century noted Doctors encouraged developing European-Style spas as centers for Health.With it's wealth of Mineral Waters Saratoga Springs was developed as a spa generating the development of many large Hotels.
In 1863 Saratoga Race Course opened. Horse racing and betting greatly increased the City's attraction as a Tourist destination. By 1870 it was the nation's top upscale resort City. Tourism continues to be Saratoga's Leading asset with Saratoga Race Course and Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) leading the way.
SPAC was built in the late 1960's featuring classical and popular music and dance. It is the Summer home to New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra. According to legend the creation of the Potato Chip is also associated with Saratoga Springs.
